Thai Nguyen tea is considered the most popular tea in Vietnam. From North to South, from luxury shops to sidewalks, this tea always holds the “number 1” position, almost every Vietnamese knows it.

What is Thai Nguyen tea?

Thai Nguyen tea  (also known as  Thai Nguyen tea, Bac tea, Moc Cau tea ) is a specialty green tea grown and processed in Thai Nguyen – a province in the northern midland and mountainous region, only 75km from Hanoi.

This is the most popular type of tea in Vietnam. For many people, when they hear the word “tea”, they automatically assume it is Thai Nguyen tea and not any other type.

The quality of tea is due to the delicate combination of tea varieties and the meticulous and elaborate processing. The characteristic aroma of Tan Cuong Thai Nguyen tea is mainly the aroma created by heat treatment. This is a stage that requires the tea maker to have a lot of experience.

Thai Nguyen tea has many types, depending on the quality, the raw material is harvested differently.  Non Tom tea  is a higher quality type of Thai Nguyen green tea.

Thai Nguyen has many tea growing regions, the most famous of which is Tan Cuong Thai Nguyen tea region. In addition, there are other tea regions such as: La Bang tea (Dai Tu), Trai Cai tea (Dong Hy), Song Cau tea… Tan Cuong Thai Nguyen tea with its rich aroma of young rice, rich astringent taste, is very popular with tea connoisseurs. Tra Viet is currently selling this Tan Cuong Thai Nguyen tea.

How to choose delicious Thai Nguyen tea

As mentioned above, Thai Nguyen tea is a type of tea that is very popular with Vietnamese people, and the market is very large. But because of that, the quality of tea is also varied, from good to bad. If you do not have certain knowledge about this type of tea, you can easily buy poor quality tea.

Here are some suggestions to help you easily choose delicious Thai Nguyen tea:

Choose delicious Thai Nguyen green tea based on the appearance of the tea fibers

The simplest way for you to easily choose good tea is to look at the appearance of the tea fibers. Good tea is tea with even, curly, uniform color, no yellow leaves, stems or broken pieces.

Next, smell the dry tea by picking up a handful of tea or bringing the mouth of the tea bag to your nose. Good tea will usually have a very distinctive green tea aroma, along with a very pleasant fresh smell. Old tea or poor quality tea will have this aroma very weak or non-existent.

Taste the tea to feel the flavor

After observing the tea fibers and smelling the dry tea fibers, you should brew the tea to taste the flavor. Good Thai Nguyen tea usually has the following elements:

Tea color:  After brewing, tea is usually bright yellow to slightly green, clear, bright, and free of sediment.

Aroma:  After brewing, the tea has a very distinctive aroma of young rice. This is the “addictive” aroma of this tea.

Tea Taste:  Take a sip of tea, you will feel the bitter taste in your mouth, along with the rich taste, the delicious taste of umami, and a little sweetness, very balanced. After swallowing, you will feel the sweet taste spreading in your mouth, and the aroma of the tea still remains when you exhale.

Some notes to make Thai Nguyen tea more delicious

Water temperature, tea quantity, and steeping time are the three factors that determine whether a tea is good or bad. Thai Nguyen tea is a type of tea that is especially sensitive to these three factors. Adjusting or decreasing each factor will have a very different effect on the brewed water.

Temperature:  higher temperature tea will be fragrant, but more bitter. Lower water temperature tea will be sweeter, but less fragrant. Water that is too cold will make the tea taste watery.

Amount of tea:  the more tea, the stronger the taste, but also more bitter and wastes tea :)

Steeping time:  steeping tea for too long will cause a harsh taste, steeping too quickly will make the tea taste bland.

Discover the balance between these three elements in your own way.

Vietnamese Tea Recommendations:  Temperature: 85°C, tea quantity: 8g/200ml, steeping time: 20 seconds.

How to preserve Tan Cuong Thai Nguyen green tea

The characteristic of Thai Nguyen tea is that after being freshly made, the tea is very fragrant, with a rich flavor, because it has just undergone the drying process. However, this type of tea quickly loses its aroma and changes its flavor in a short time of exposure to the environment. Therefore, you should pay attention to the preservation of tea:

  • Please note  to keep tea in the freezer  when not in use (do not open the vacuum bag).
  • Once opened,  use tea within 15 days .
  •  Keep unopened tea tightly closed , away from odors, direct light and moisture.

Interesting information about Thai Nguyen Tea you may not know

Origin of Thai Nguyen tea

Tea trees in Thai Nguyen originated from Phu Hoi – Phu Tho. The person who brought the first tea seedlings to Thai Nguyen was Mr.  Vu Van Hiet  (1883-1945) around 1920-1922. He is also known as Mr. Doi Nam, known as the founder of the tea industry in Thai Nguyen because of his many contributions to the tea industry in Thai Nguyen.

There are also other sources of information that say that the founder of the Thai Nguyen tea industry is Mr. Nghe So Nguyen Dinh Tuan, who was the Judge of  Thai Nguyen province and later held the position of Governor of Thai Nguyen.

“According to the story, the Xinjiang region at that time was vast and mountainous, wild and dense, every night you could hear deer roaring and tigers roaring, and stories of tigers coming to catch buffaloes and pigs happened like clockwork. This was a semi-mountainous region, with more mountains and less land. People cleared fields, sowed rice and planted potatoes, worked hard but earned little, and their income was not much, sometimes for months on end they did not see a grain of rice, only eating potatoes and cassava.

Following the instructions and some financial support of the mandarin, Mr. Vu Van Hiet, the first leader of Tan Cuong commune, along with a number of young men and soldiers sent by the mandarin, traveled to Phu Tho to ask for tea seeds. After many trips like that, Tan Cuong tea trees kept multiplying. In the mandarin’s autobiography, he said that when he took office as a professor in Yen Bai province, he visited and stayed at the house of Mr. Cu Doan in Phu Tho, who was a classmate in the Huong exam. Therefore, the mandarin knew the economic value of tea trees, so he sent people from Tan Cuong to meet his friend to ask for tea seeds. But the tea trees from Phu Tho brought to Tan Cuong were of a completely different quality, with a unique flavor that could not be found anywhere else. It was the suitable climate and soil conditions that created the special delicious flavor of Tan Cuong tea trees. In 1925, Tan Cuong was harvested for tea and at first it was called Bach Hac tea, perhaps because the seedlings were taken from Bach Hac area, Phu Tho province.” ( According to wikipedia)

Tea trees in Thai Nguyen are small and short, have thick leaves, and give high yields, quite similar to  Oolong tea trees  in Bao Loc.

The production of Thai Nguyen green tea bears many family marks.

Tea in Thai Nguyen is mainly produced on a household scale. Each family has a tea garden around the house. Tea production in the past was mainly done by hand. With only 2 tools, a frying pan and a mortar, with the experience of long-time tea makers, the tea is guaranteed to have just the right amount of water, not burnt, not raw, not crushed, and the tea fibers are beautifully curled. The entire process ends with the step of spinning the fragrant, strong flavor of young rice, typical of this tea line.

Nowadays, tea making in Thai Nguyen has been supported by machines, such as tea mortars and electric cast iron cages for roasting tea. However, the human factor is always emphasized, to ensure that the tea is made to the “right” level, creating the most delicious flavor for this type of tea.

Tea is usually picked just enough to be processed on the same day. Each type of tea is picked according to its own standards to make that type of tea. For example, only the top part of the tea is picked from the top of the tea bud, one bud and one leaf are picked from the tea bud, and other types of tea are picked from one bud, one or two leaves or more depending on the type.

The aroma of tea is due to the secret of drying.

Thai Nguyen tea has a very distinctive and strong aroma of young rice. This is the natural aroma of tea, without using any flavoring. This aroma is mainly created by heat treatment. This is a step that requires the tea maker to have a lot of experience.

Freshly dried tea usually has a very strong aroma. The aroma will fade over time. Therefore, it is best to use Thai Nguyen tea as soon as possible after opening the package to ensure the best quality.

Addictive tea flavor

Tan Cuong Thai Nguyen tea has a characteristic aroma of young rice, a rich and thick tea flavor, bringing a refreshing feeling to the user. This is also a very special type of tea that tea connoisseurs must always have a little in the house.

Two addictive characteristics of this tea are:

–  Thick, clear taste . The thick liquid creates a full feeling in the mouth and spreads the tea flavor throughout the palate.

–  Long aftertaste  after drinking. The tea flavor lingers in the mouth for a long time, clinging to the entire palate and a lingering sweetness. After drinking the tea, a few hours later, you smack your lips and still feel the sweetness lingering in your throat.

That is also the reason why people who have “accidentally” fallen in love with this type of tea often find it difficult to switch to another type of tea.

So many names that it’s confusing

Thai Nguyen tea is probably the type of tea that has the most different names. This makes it easy for those who are not familiar with it to be confused when trying to figure out what to call it. Here are some other common names for this type of tea:
